Method 2. Choose a web converter. This method works for any device connected to the web, including smartphones and tablets. Sites like Online-Convert [1] X Research source contain lists of all of the file types it can convert to and from. Make sure any site you choose is capable of handling your image type. RAW files, are harder to convert online due to their size.
Image files can be huge. Upload your image. Note that many converters have maximum file sizes. Read through the terms or usage policy before uploading. Some converters allow you to enter a URL, which is great if your image is online.
Verify that the converter is ready to convert your file to a JPEG. Some converters also allow you to modify the size and quality of the file on this screen. Convert the image. This could take several minutes. Once the process is complete, your image will be converted to a JPEG.
Method 3. Open your image with Preview. The image has to be on your computer for this method to work. Change the format to JPEG. You can also adjust the quality and resolution if you wish.
The higher the quality or resolution, the more space the photo will take up on your hard drive. Rename the file and save. Method 4. Get Gimp. Open the image you want to convert. Modify your options. A new dialog box will appear with options for your JPEG. Move the slider to the place where your image looks best in the preview.
The file already has. Method 5. Understand what changing the file extension does. If your image file is not already a JPEG file, changing the file extension could break your file. File extensions are not case-sensitive. JPG and. Before you get started, make a note of the original file extension so that you can change it back if necessary. Find your file. It could be on your desktop, as in the example, or in a separate folder you can access through Finder or Windows Explorer.
Make the filename editable. Delete the current file extension. Type JPG after the period. Upper or lowercase is fine. Your filename should look something like this: image.
Confirm your change. The more you compress a file, the more data you lose and subsequently the worse your final image is going to look after multiple iterations through the algorithm.
Still, when used properly, JPG delivers decent-looking images with small file sizes. You can convert an image into JPG format using an image editing app on your computer or one of the many file conversion sites available on the web. Most image-editing programs allow you to convert an image to JPG. You can do it with Paint or Paint 3D , or you can download a third-party image app. Our favorite app for quick image work is IrfanView. The default quality is fine if you want to convert directly into JPG, but if you want a little more control over the compression of your file, the Save Options window has a couple of extras to check out.
Selecting the image quality is the same as the compression rate—the higher the quality, the less your image is compressed and the bigger the file. IrfanView also includes a nice feature that lets you set a file size limit. Mac comes pre-installed with Preview, which you can use for more than just viewing image files.
Higher compression means a smaller file size, but you also lose some image quality. If you prefer using an online file conversion site instead of a desktop app, then look no further than Convertimage.
